A Bossier City K-9 officer received minor injuries this morning when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by a burglary suspect who fled from police. The same officer later took the suspect into custody following a pursuit and manhunt.

Police were called to an air conditioning and heating repair shop in the 3800 block of East Texas Street this morning in reference to a burglary in progress. Officers arrived on the scene and confronted a suspect in a pickup truck. The suspect, later identified as Warren Jessie Newsom, 33, of Shreveport, quickly accelerated and sideswiped K-9 officer Neil Nunnery on his leg and subsequently ran over Officer Nunnery's foot.

Newsom also attempted to run over a second officer who managed to get out of the way and avoid being hit. Newsom then fled at a high rate of speed heading east on East Texas Street in the westbound lanes of traffic. Several officer's, including Officer Nunnery, pursued Newsom down East Texas Street and north on Swan Lake Road to Cardnell Road where Newsom lost control in a curve and wrecked before fleeing on foot into a wooded area.

Police searched the area with the assistance of the Bossier Sheriff's Office and a Louisiana State Police helicopter. At approximately 8 a.m., Officer Nunnery and his police dog Rico located Newsom nearby hiding under a boat trailer next to a mobile home. Newsom was given commands to come out or a police dog would be deployed. Newsom refused at which time Rico was deployed and the suspect surrendered.

Newsom was treated at the scene for a dog bite then taken to LSU Hospital in Shreveport for further treatment. Newsom was release from the hospital later and booked into the Bossier City Jail on multiple charges including two counts of attempted murder for trying to run over the two police officers.

Police are looking for a second suspect in connection with the burglary. Officer Nunnery did not require emergency medical treatment.
