PUBLIC UTILITIES: Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator

POSITION TITLE:  Plant Operator      ( Wastewater Treatment  Plant )


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  Operates wastewater treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment at the wastewater treatment plant.  Monitors control panels and plant SCADA computers to control the flow and processing of wastewater throughout the plant by manually or remotely adjusting valves and gates. Operate pumps, motors, and other equipment involved in the wastewater treatment process.  Observes variations in operating conditions and interpret meter, gauge, and laboratory tests to make adjustments to the wastewater treatment plant as needed.   Calculate plant loadings, chemical usage, sludge storage and removal, flow rates and levels, and oxidation rates.  Collect wastewater samples either by manual dippers or automatic samplers as required for process control or State and Federal reporting requirements. Perform the following laboratory tests:  pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorine residual, sludge blanket levels, and moisture percentage.  Assist with plant maintenance tasks when required.  Perform any other tasks/jobs assigned by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of Wastewater Treatment.  




REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge of basic mathematics; ability to keep simple records; work with mechanical tools, gauges, meters, and valves.  Must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Have good eyesight and eye-hand-foot coordination.  Have the ability to use inductive and deductive reasoning.  Must be able to perform manual labor including lifting up to 50 lbs.  


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:  High School Graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.  Employee will be required to obtain the following State License:  Class I Wastewater Treatment within one year of hire date; Class II Wastewater Treatment within two years of hire date; Class III Wastewater Treatment within four years of hire date; and Class IV Wastewater Treatment within six years of hire date.
